“ First thing - You gotta know what you are dealing with here. JC Fish Market & Soul Food is a Chinese house that does a very good fried fish. I walked in expecting something else entirely. But, with the proprietress shouting into the phone in Cantonese, and the two male workers answering her similarly, it was plain the soul food had a very eastern orientation. There is only one 4 seat table in the joint, so this is fundamentally a take out shop - something these folks do very well. The menu is set up primarily for sandwiches, platters, fried chicken and dessert. Prices are downright cheap, with the range for sandwiches between $3.75 - $6.95; regular platters (fries & cole slaw), $4.65 - $10.65; and the dinners (two sides, corn bread), $6.60 - $12.75. The quantities are large, easily enough for 2. Still, to make it work, you need to understand how the deal is constructed. As a newbie, I ordered the Whiting Sandwich. I watched as the three fish fillets were taken from the fridge, hand dipped in the breading, and placed into the deep fryer. Five minutes later they were removed from the hot oil with tongs, and placed into a styro take away, with holes in the top. A pile of pre-packaged plastic wrapped 2 slices of bread were placed on top of the container, and everything placed in a plastic bag. Plastic forks and napkins were to the side for the taking. I picked up a square of corn bread to taste @ .85. The price was under six bucks. Returning to my office, I opened the package and prepared to eat. I took out the bread, slapped 2 of the 3 fillets on the first slice and closed the preparation with the top slice. The bread was soft and fresh. The Whiting Fillets were great! The breading was light with a pleasant spice mix. The fish itself was thin and tasted as if it had never been frozen. The cooking oil was clean and added nothing to the flavor of the meal. The corn bread was likewise fresh and mildly sweet. No complaints. Impressive. Knowing what I know now, I would probably head for the platters in the future, to grab a little greenery for my diet. Too, if the fish was this good, I can imagine what they might do with the chicken. If there is a downside to all this, it is that the meal certainly smelled like fish. Now, my car smells of it, and my office smells of it, too. People walking by my door were loudly sniffing and asking; "Fish?" ”
